Knitting Stitches – Here Are The Basics

Knitting is really a type of art, in which one expresses themselves through the yarn. This can be done by hand or with the use of a machine. There are various styles and techniques with which someone can enjoy this activity.

There are a variety of needles and threads that can change the whole get up of the material that one is stitching by using the basics of knitting stitches . With no exceptions to the rule, the purl stitch and the knit stitch, are there in each and every piece of stitched clothing. There are some types of knitting stitches, which we will go over below.

The Purl Stitch- It is very much the opposite to the knit stitch. One holds the the yarn in front of the knitting and the right needle gets inserted from the back to the front side into the first stitch on the left needle. You can use your index finger to wind the yarn around and down the right needle in a counter clockwise movement.

Garter Stitch- This stitch involves every row in flat knitting and is a good and very effective type of stitching for new people starting out.

The Stockinette is one of the more common used knitting patterns. One row is knit, which is followed by purl in the next, and then a repetition of the pattern. It usually curls at the edges when it is not combined with any other stitches such as non-curling, stitch patterns.

The Cast on Stitch – One can do a cast on in many different ways, and each one of them gives a slightly varied finish. Two versions of cast on are, one with one needle, thumb cast on and for a slightly neater finish and for the second, the needle is cast on.

Cast Off- When one is knitting stitches, it is important for them to make a neat finish to give a good edge for the sewing together.

Knit Stitch- This knit is one of the most essentials in knitting. For one to knit hats or scarves one needs would need to master knit stitches.
